For many years, SPI Global relied on a PN cutter, a trusted workhorse first introduced in the early 2000s. This cutter served the company well, proving reliable and consistent throughout its long service life. However, as cutting technology evolved, so too did the demands of modern manufacturing. The PN cutter’s technology had reached its natural limits. While dependable, it could not match the speed, flexibility, or efficiency offered by the latest generation of digital cutting systems.

Paul Boyes, Managing Director at SPI Global, explains “Our previous cutter had been with us for many years and performed brilliantly but manufacturing requirements have changed. We needed to increase efficiency, cut waste and gain more flexibility with the materials we use. It was simply time to move forward with newer technology.”

After a thorough evaluation, SPI Global selected the Zünd G3 L-3200 a pioneering digital cutting system designed for performance, precision, and reliability. The new G3 cutter has quickly made a significant impact. Tasks that previously required 10 minutes of nesting now take just two minutes, delivering a 20% increase in efficiency. Similarly, a cut file that once took 10 minutes to complete on the PN cutter is now finished in two and a half minutes, representing more than a 50% improvement in speed.

Paul said “The latest nesting software is far more advanced and much faster to use. The system runs quietly, and with adjustable vacuum control via ZCC, it’s noticeably more energy efficient. The higher beam clearance also allows us to handle a wider range of materials, supporting our new multi-material approach with products made from materials such as mesh.”

Another standout feature for SPI Global is the Zünd marking module, which enables part numbers to be marked directly onto cut pieces. This enhancement provides full traceability and helps streamline production by improving part identification and organisation throughout the process.

Since introducing the Zünd G3 L-3200, SPI Global has seen immediate results in speed, precision and sustainability. Reduced material waste, especially PVC which supports the company’s environmental goals, while improved efficiency allows the team to meet increasing demand more effectively. Paul explains “I am a very analytical person and what I really value is the insight we now gain from Zünd Connect, it gives us the data we need to analyse performance and identify new ways to improve. It’s helping us refine our processes and get even more out of our investment.”
